China Eastern Airlines has ordered 70 new single-aisle jets from Airbus.

The Shanghai-based carrier has decided to renew its short- and medium-haul fleet with the European planemaker’s new A320neo aircraft, which is designed to be more fuel-efficient than the standard A320.

The order is valued at more than US$7 billion at current list prices, but China Eastern has acquired the jets at a significant discount. Deliveries are expected to run from 2018 to 2020.

The order reaffirms China Eastern’s commitment to the A320 series. The airline already operates more than 200 of Airbus’ narrow-body jets, including A319s, A320s and A321s. It now plans to phase out its older A300-600 and Boeing 737-300 aircraft.
