Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s new low-cost carrier hub, KLIA 2, will open on 2 May 2014, despite the presence of cracks in the tarmac, Malaysia’s acting transport minister has said.
Malaysia’s Bernama news agency reported Hishammuddin Hussein as saying that “minor” cracks had been uncovered in an independent inspection of KLIA 2, and these will be fixed prior to opening.
The evaluation was carried out by independent consultancy firm, Ikram Premier Consulting (IPC).
“In IPC’s evaluation, which focused on safety aspects of the taxiway, apron, runway and the surrounding areas, they stated that there were no cracks on the runway, only minor ones on the taxiway,” the acting minister was quoted saying in KL on Monday.
“As for the surrounding areas, it was found there was land sinking in some places and these too needed to be rectified although they did not pose any safety risk to the airport’s users,” he added.
IPC will now conduct a second evaluation of KLIA2 on 14 April 2014.
“That is three weeks before the opening of KLIA2 so as to ensure safety aspects at the runway, taxiway and parking apron are up to the mark,” Bernama reported Hishammuddin as saying.
KLIA 2 was originally due to open in May 2013 but has been beset with problems. Once open it will replace the existing LCCT and provide a permanent home to AirAsia and other low-cost carriers.
