Brazilian planemaker Embraer has rolled out the first new E175 regional jet featuring a range of aerodynamic improvements that reduce fuel burn.
The modifications include the introduction of new wingtips and the streamlining of aerodynamic surfaces. And during several months of performance trials, the revised aircraft was found to consume 6.4% less fuel than a similar flight using the original E175. This marks an improvement on the previous 5% reduction.
“The 6.4% fuel consumption reduction demonstrates the expertise of our development and manufacturing teams and partners, and our commitment to provide our customers with the best product to keep them competitive,” said Paulo Cesar Silva, president & CEO of Embraer.
“We are delivering, on schedule, an airplane unique to the market. With the most comfortable passenger cabin in the 70- to 90-seat category, the E175 is the airplane with the lowest operating cost in its class.”
This latest programme of improvements are intended to keep Embraer’s aircraft competitive, until the company launches its brand new E175-E2, which is expected to enter service in 2020.
The first customer delivery of the revamped E175 is expected in the coming weeks.
