Updated 30 April 09.14

East Midlands Airport has reopened after an aircraft fault forced the runway to close yesterday.

More than 20 flights and thousands of passengers were affected by the closure, which occurred after a Boeing 737 carrying cargo developed a problem with its landing gear at 2.30am yesterday morning. The two men onboard the freighter did not suffer any injuries.

Jet2.com carried customers due to depart from the airport by coach to Manchester and Leeds Bradford to catch flights to Palma, Tenerife and Funchal.

Flybe had several flights to Paris, Belfast City, Edinburgh and Glasgow cancelled.

Monarch, Ryanair and bmi regional were also among the airlines affected.
