A new low-cost carrier based in Guangzhou has placed an order for 50 Boeing 737 aircraft.
9 Air, which is a subsidiary of Shanghai’s Juneyao Airlines, placed the order this week, in a deal potentially worth more than US$4 billion at list prices. The order will include standard B737s and the new, fuel-efficient B737 MAX.
“We are honoured to welcome 9 Air as Boeing’s newest customer,” said Ihssane Mounir, Boeing’s vice president of sales & marketing for Northeast Asia.
“The success of Boeing’s market-leading 737 family of airplanes has proven to be a winning formula for low-cost carriers around the world. I am confident that this success will be replicated with 9 Air’s low-cost business model.”
The order marks a major win for Boeing, as 9 Air’s parent company, Juneyao Airlines, has always operated a fleet of Airbus jets. But with this order 9 Air is poised to become an all-Boeing operator.
The new low-cost carrier plans to launch domestic services in China later this year.
