Etihad Airways has commenced a new route to Perth, as it continues to expand its operations in Australia.

Earlier this month the Abu Dhabi-based carrier announced plans to fly direct to Brisbane next year, de-linking the service from Singapore. And this week, Etihad followed this up with the launch of a new daily direct service between Perth and Abu Dhabi.

Perth becomes Etihad’s fourth Australian gateway, following Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, and takes the airline’s total number of weekly flights between the UAE and Australia to 351.

“Today’s inaugural flight creates the first commercial air link between Perth and Abu Dhabi and marks the beginning of an exciting new era of partnership between the state of Western Australia and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi,” said Etihad’s president & CEO, James Hogan.

“Abu Dhabi and Perth are each popular business travel and holiday destinations – attracting 2.8 million and 7.3 million visitors respectively in 2013 – and we are already seeing a strong commercial response to the new route from travellers in the UAE and Western Australia.”

The new service will now leave Abu Dhabi daily at 2210 and arrive in Perth at 1310 the following day. The return leg then departs Perth at 1555, getting back into Abu Dhabi at 2325. All flights will operate using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

Etihad’s partnership with Virgin Australia also allows it to offer codeshare flights from Perth to 13 regional airports in Western Australia, including Albany, Broome, Kalgoorlie-Boulder and Karratha.
