Salalah is gearing up to welcome the organising committee of the sixth edition of the Muscat Youth Summit (MYS). Catering to young minds, the summit MYS 2014 with an apt theme – ‘Opening Minds & Borders’ will look to focus on the untapped potential of an outdoor economy and capitalize on market trends in ‘adventure tourism’.

The summit is scheduled to take place from 13-18 December 2014 and looks to attract 100 Omani youth. The youth will look to develop, create and market sustainable business ideas to attract Millennials to the Sultanate.

The participating youth will promote Oman and in particular Salalah’s tourism and travel sector through developing marketing campaigns and exploring prospects in adventure tourism, ecotourism, arts and humanities and community engagement.

“With 50% of the world’s population under the age of 30, Millennials are currently the largest generation of consumers. They want, more than ever, to enrich themselves in a cultural experience, to meet local people and improve their employability. In fact, given the growth of Oman’s tourism sector and its significant potential, it’s well positioned to drive an outdoor economy industry that offers a diversity of rewarding experiences for Millennials, both in terms of the journey they are looking for and in providing highly skilled career opportunities,” said H H Sayyid Faisal bin Turki Al Said, chairman of MYS organizing committee.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council’s (WTTC) 2014 Travel and Tourism Economic Impact Report, Oman will lead the Middle East’s travel and tourism sector in 2014. The industry has directly contributed US$2.5 billion to Oman’s economy in 2013, which is three percent of the country’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This forecast is to rise by 10.2% to US$2.78 billion in 2014. At the end of 2014 Oman’s Travel & Tourism will employ 79,500 jobs.

“In partnership with Ministry of Tourism, we have a responsibility to educate the youth on endless possibilities and opportunities that exist in this industry. This is the kind of industry that we want our youth to explore, lead and enterprise,” reaffirmed H H Al Said.
