The Legoland theme park concept continues to expand in Asia, with plans having been announced for a new attraction in South Korea.

Merlin Entertainments, which operates the Legoland parks, has signed an agreement to operate Legoland Korea – a brand new theme park on an island in Chuncheon, in northern South Korea’s Gangwon province.

Scheduled to open in 2017, the park will become the first Legoland in South Korea and only the third in Asia Pacific, after Legoland Malaysia, which opened in 2012, and Legoland Japan, which is also due to open in 2017.

The Korean park will be developed at a cost of KRW300 billion (US$270 million), approximately KRW100bn of which will be invested by Merlin.

“I am delighted to be able to announce another Asian Legoland Park project,” said Nick Varney, Merlin’s CEO. “South Korea offers both a developed theme park market and strong Lego brand recognition. In addition, the city of Chuncheon provides the ideal location, with great transport links and a picturesque island setting.

“We continue to be excited by the potential opportunity of Legoland parks globally and reiterate our target of opening, on average, a new park every two to three years,” he added.

Legoland Korea will be located on the island of Jung-do in Chuncheon, approximately one hour’s drive from Seoul. As part of the agreement, the government of Gangwon province will fund the construction of a bridge to island and theme park. “Further retail and complementary leisure offerings” are also being planned for the island.

The new park adds to Merlin’s existing portfolio of six Legoland parks in five countries.
