The current chief executive of Aer Lingus has been announced as the new CEO of Malaysia Airlines.
Christoph R. Mueller’s appointment is part of the Malaysian carrier’s restructure, where he will be CEO of MAS NewCo and nominated on the board of Malaysian Airline System Berhad (“MAS”).
His contract with Aer Lingus ends on 1 May 2015 but discussions are on-going as to whether Mueller will start at an earlier date in March or April.
Mueller joined Aer Lingus in 2009 and has a history of financial and strategy planning to turn companies around. Previous to Aer Lingus he was head of controlling and an executive board member at TUI AG and is a former aviation director at TUI Travel.
Mueller’s appointment is the latest made by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, the investment fund set up by the Government of Malaysia to restructure the carrier following a devastating year with the MH17 and MH370 incidents.
Other appointments have included Dato’ Sri Mohammed Shazalli Ramly as non-executive director and roles in the Corporate Reskilling Centre, namely Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid as chairman, Shahryn Azmi as CEO and Dato’ Boonler Somchit as non-executive director and advisor.
“The appointments announced today are part of efforts by the government and Khazanah to lay strong foundations for the future success of our national carrier. It is imperative that we have the best available talent with the expertise and experience to help drive the progress of the restructuring effort further forward, lead the airline to profitability, and groom a Malaysian successor to assume the leadership of the airline in the future. The government is committed to seeing through the complete overhaul of MAS to its successful conclusion,” said Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib, Prime Minister of Malaysia.
