Aer Lingus reaches 2014 target as IAG ‘prepares new bid’

Aer Lingus has confirmed an increase in operating profit for 2014, as it continues to be a takeover target by International Airlines Group (IAG).
Operating target for 2014 is ahead of the EUR61.1 million (US$72.2m) posted in 2013 after chasing the trans-Atlantic market and cutting short-haul routes.
Yesterday the carrier reported a 3.2% increase in passengers to 11 million during 2014 including its regional business.
IAG, which owns British Airways, Iberia and Vueling, is expected to make another offer for Aer Lingus soon, having been turned down previously for ‘fundamentally undervaluing’ the Irish carrier.
While the offer from IAG boss Willie Walsh was rejected on a price basis it is also thought that there are concerns on the use of slots at Heathrow Airport should IAG take over.
The Irish government wants the slots to stay for flights to Ireland, and also wants to maintain routes from Ireland to North America.
Ryanair has previously attempted to buy Aer Lingus several times but always been rejected.
