Inbound UK tourism numbers beat targets

Inbound tourism numbers to the UK are set to surpass VisitBritain’s original forecast, the tourism agency has said.
Based on data from the first 11 months of 2014 the firm said more international visitors are heading to Britain than before, with 32.4 million visiting between January and November last year.
This is a 7% rise on the same period in 2013, with spend also up 3% to more than £20 billion.
While London is popular for business trips there are also more holidaying in the country with the figure at 13m in the 11 months, compared to 12.7m year-on-year.
“Inbound tourism continues to be the fastest growing sector of the tourism industry and one of Britain’s most successful export industries, generating jobs and growth across Britain. We are delighted to have played our part in delivering this success,” said Patricia Yates, director of strategy and communications at VisitBritain. “VisitBritain is focused on continuing to grow the value of inbound tourism in 2015. The launch of our Countryside is GREAT campaign in New York next week will showcase our beautiful landscapes and encourage visitors to explore different parts of Britain.”
The numbers are set to continue growing this year with visits to reach 35.1m and spend of £22.2bn, setting a new record.
