At least 31 people died yesterday when a passenger aircraft crashed into Taipei‘s Keelung River.

The TransAsia Airways flight hit a road bridge before plunging into the river on Wednesday morning.

Dramatic footage showed the aircraft seconds before the crash, out of control and clipping a road bridge, its wings perpendicular to the ground. It then crashed into the river, finally coming to a rest upside-down.

The China News Agency (CNA) reported a Taipei government spokesperson as confirming that the flight had just taken off from the city’s Songshan Airport, en route to Kinmen Island, when the incident occurred.

It was carrying 53 passengers, including 31 tourists from mainland China, plus five crew members. There were 15 survivors, but 12 people remain unaccounted for.

Local media reports suggest that the aircraft may have suffered an engine failure.
In July last year 48 people died when a TransAsia Airways ATR aircraft crashed on Penghu Island.
