Viking Cruises’ first ocean vessel has successfully completed its sea trials ahead of launching this spring.

Viking Star took its first voyage in open water in the Aegean Sea during December and is now back at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard for final decoration before launching on 11 April.

After sailing its first itinerary from Istanbul the ship will make its way to Bergen, Norway where it will be officially christened on Norwegian Constitution Day on 17 May.

Bergen Mayor Trude Drevland will be godmother to the ship and will be present during the naming ceremony.

“Following six months of nonstop construction since her float out, this was a major milestone for Viking Star, and we are proud to be another step closer to launch,” said Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking Cruises. “Now we can focus on the finishing touches, and we look forward to welcoming guests on board in two months’ time.”

Viking Star will have cabin space for 930 passengers with all staterooms featuring verandas. Its facilities include two pools, a spa, Explorers’ Lounge, Wintergarden, multiple dining options and entertainment including lectures, a piano lounge and music.

Another two ocean ships are on order: Viking Sea and Viking Sky.
