Qatar Airways has confirmed its commitment to Japan, amid rumours that the airline was planning to withdraw from the country.
The comments came during the visit of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, to Tokyo, and the Qatari-Japanese Economic Forum, which was held in the Japanese capital on 20 February 2015. Qatar Airways’ group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker, formed part of the high-level Qatari delegation.
“Since 2008, Qatar Airways has transported close to 1.5 million passengers on its flights to Japan, carried over 40,000 tonnes of cargo, and we are proud to say that we have generated 25% year-on-year passenger traffic growth between Japan and Qatar since 2008,” said Al Baker.
“On June 18 last year, we touched down at Tokyo Haneda International Airport marking our third destination in Japan, and we are just as committed today to our Japanese routes as when we launched them. Qatar Airways continues to look forward to working together with our partners here to enhance our operations in Japan.”
Qatar Airways currently operates three daily services to Japan, connecting Doha with Tokyo‘s two airports, Haneda and Narita, and Osaka. Last year, the airline introduced its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to Japan for the first time.
