The fourth runway has officially opened at Shanghai‘s Pudong International Airport.
Measuring 3,800 metres in length and 60 metres in width, the new runway will be able to accommodate the world’s largest passenger and cargo aircraft, including the Airbus A380.
The opening makes Pudong the first Chinese airport with four runways in service, and will expand the airport’s capacity to 1,400 daily take-offs and landings.
Pudong International Airport handled more than 50 million passengers in 2014, but such is the rate of growth in the city, this is expected to surge to 80m passengers by 2020. Construction work has already commenced on a new satellite terminal which will have 105 gates and will be able to handle 30m passengers a year when put into operation.
A new transport system will also be developed to allow passengers to travel between terminals.
Dallas-Fort Worth has the most runways of any major commercial airport in the world, with seven, followed by Chicago O’Hare and Amsterdam Schiphol airports with six.
