The luxury hotel market is on the rise in the Caribbean, it was reported at the WTM Latin America this week.
High-end hotels register higher occupancy rates than mid-range and budget accommodation among Caribbean countries. For example, in Antigua this is the case for every year between 2007 and 2014 except 2009 during the recession.
As a result, luxury chains are making huge investments in the Caribbean, including the opening of the Gansevoort Playa Imbert in Dominican Republic, the Kimpton Hotels resort in Grand Cayman and the Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall and Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall in Jamaica.
The opening of the first Jamaican Hyatt-branded all-inclusive was seen as so significant that Jamaica’s Prime Minister herself, Portia Simpson-Miller, participated in the official opening ceremony.
Growing segments in the luxury division include holidays for multiple generations, including featuring activities for all the family such as safaris. Also popular is sustainable tourism, including eco resorts and zero-impact luxury hotels, for example the Lapa Rios Ecolodge, on the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica.
