India’s government has confirmed that it will allow Chinese tourists to use its new e-visa scheme.
Following the recent state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to China, the government confirmed that China will join the existing list of 76 countries and territories on the e-visa list, with a further 31 joining the scheme in July.
In making the announcement, Modi said the move would improve relations between the world’s two most populous nations.
“Thirty-three percent of the world is either Indian or Chinese, and yet we know so little about each other,” Modi was quoted saying by The Hindu.
Other initiatives designed to bring these superpowers closer together include the establishment of new “sister-city” relationships between Hyderabad and Qingdao and Aurangabad and Dunhuang, the creation of a new Indian consulate in Chengdu and a Chinese consulate in Chennai.
India’s Minister for Tourism, Culture & Civil Aviation, Dr Mahesh Sharma, congratulated the Prime Minister for the decision to include China on the e-visa list.
“The announcement by the Prime Minister in China to extend e-tourist visa to Chinese nationals will help attract more tourists from that country to India and fill the gap of in bound and out bound tourists between India and China,” said Dr Sharma.
