Despite the turmoil surrounding FIFA and Sepp Blatter’s resignation, Qatar World Cup 2022 organisers have said they will not relinquish the right to host the football event.
English Football Association chairman Greg Dyke was one of the first to put forward the notion that the vote that saw Qatar awarded the hosting rights for the 2022 World Cup, could be annulled with a new vote to take place.
“If I was the Qatari organisers I wouldn’t sleep very well tonight,” Dyke asserted.
“I think if the evidence comes out which shows the bidding processes were above board that’s fine. If it shows they were corrupt then obviously the bids should be re-done, it’s as simple as that,” he added.
However, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Bin Ahmed Al-Thani, president of the Qatar Football Association, slammed Dyke’s responses, saying his “instinct to immediately focus on stripping Qatar of the World Cup speaks volumes on his views concerning what will be the first FIFA World Cup to take place in the Middle East”.
“We would urge Mr Dyke to let the legal process take its course and concentrate on delivering his promise to build an England team capable of winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.”
Qatar has so far seen off investigations into how it won the vote and vocal criticism surrounding hosting an event in high heat.
The country is spending heavily on infrastructure projects to host the prestigious sporting tournament and is central to its expansion plans.
