China and Russia have signed an agreement to develop “red tourism” routes, focusing on key attractions relating to the two countries’ communist heritage.
Xinhua reports that the deal, which was penned in China’s Hunan province, will lead to the development of red tourism destinations and routes, plus joint marketing initiatives, between 2015 and 2017.
The agreement was signed by Li Jinzao, head of the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) and Oleg Safonov, head of Russia’s Federal Agency for Tourism, in the city of Shaoshan – the birthplace of Mao Tse Tung.
Xinhua reported CNTA data as showing a 16% annual growth rate at China’s red tourism sites over the last decade.
