More Singaporeans will celebrate the festive season at sea this year, according to Royal Caribbean.

The cruise line revealed today that local bookings on its Christmas and New Year cruises have doubled this year. Singaporeans typically comprise 20-30% of the guests onboard Royal Caribbean’s festive sailings, but in 2015 this proportion of local passengers will rise to around 50%.

“To see local bookings for our special festive sailings rise sharply this year is exciting. The increased knowledge of cruising in the market, combined with Christmas, New Year, and [Chinese New Year] backing onto weekends this year, we believe has driven the spike,” said Sean Treacy, Royal Caribbean’s managing director for Singapore & Southeast Asia.

“Our customers have grown more aware of the broad range of activities onboard for multi-generational groups who tend to travel in the holidays, as well as the benefits of booking early to take advantage of early bird prices.

“Additionally, we find all travellers are keen to escape the shopping-centric holiday crowd in Singapore, but often find it difficult to pin-down deals for flights and hotels. As a cruise includes both travel and accommodation in one package, it’s one of the best value travel options for festive periods.”

Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas cruise ship will offer Christmas and New Year sailings from Singapore this year, with five-night voyages departing on 24 and 29 December, calling at Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Phuket. The company will also offer two special four-night Chinese New Year cruises in February.
