Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism has identified 12 destinations in which it will aim to drive its marine tourism sector.

Bali, Lombok and Komodo Island form part of the plan, along with Wakatobi in Southeast Sulawesi, Tomini in Central Sulawesi, Derawan in East Kalimantan, Raja Ampat in Papua, Nias in North Sumatra, Mentawai in West Sumatra, Ujung Kulon in West Java, and Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait.

“The 12 islands are included in the blueprint of the marine tourism development plan for natural resources and creative economy in promoting the brand ‘Wonderful Indonesia’,” the Anatara news agency reported Welly Rame Rohimone, acting head of Tourism & Creative Economy office as saying.

“East Nusa Tenggara will be developed as Indonesia’s tourism gateway, besides Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and 10 other islands,” he added.

Indonesia has 54,700km of coastline, second only to Canada, and an estimated 17,000 islands.
