Singapore Airlines’ first Airbus A350 aircraft has completed its maiden flight in the skies over southern France.

The aircraft, an A350-900 featuring the airline’s livery, took off from the Airbus factory in Toulouse on Tuesday for the test flight. It will now enter the final phase of production before being delivered to SIA in the coming weeks.

The airline has ordered a total of 67 A350-900s, which it will deploy on its long-haul routes. Seven of the aircraft will be “ultra-long range” versions, which will enable the carrier to resume direct flights to the US.

SIA also has outstanding orders for five more A380s and 30 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, and this new fleet of long-haul jets will gradually replace its older A330-300 and B777-200 aircraft.

To date, Airbus has taken orders for 777 A350s. Other major customers include Qatar Airways (80 aircraft), Etihad (62), Cathay Pacific (46), United Airlines (35) and Japan Airlines (31).
