IHG has signed a management agreement for its first luxury InterContinental resort in Phuket.

Scheduled to open in 2019, the new-build InterContinental Phuket Resort will be located on Kamala Beach, overlooking the Andaman Sea.

It will form part of the high-end MontAzure development, which covers 73 hectares and includes luxury apartments, beach clubs, retail outlets, medical and wellness centres and a nature reserve.

“Phuket has always been an important destination in Southeast Asia for IHG, with the island’s tourist arrivals recording double-digit year-on-year growth since 2011. We are glad to be able to work with our long-term partner Proud Phuket Resorts Co, on what will be a key resort property for us in a prime destination in Thailand,” said Alan Watts, IHG’s chief operating officer for Asia, the Middle East & Africa.

Once open, InterContinental Phuket Resort will comprise of a mix of hotel rooms and villas, plus a range of F&B offerings, a swimming pool, spa, fitness centre and kids’ club, along with space for weddings and other functions. Guests will have direct access to a 2km stretch of sandy beach.

“Following up on the success of our mixed-use developments in Bangkok and Hua Hin, including the InterContinental Resort Hua Hin, Proud Real Estate has envisioned a plan to replicate the mixed-use model in Phuket by developing the very first InterContinental Phuket Resort to cater to the growing number of luxury travellers to the region,” said Pasu Liptapanlop, executive director of Proud Real Estate. “Located on Kamala beach, InterContinental Phuket Resort will be one of the most exclusive luxury resorts in Phuket.”

IHG currently operates 14 InterContinental properties in Southeast Asia, with eight more due to open within the next three to five years. The company also operates four hotels in Phuket under its Holiday Inn and Holiday inn Express brands, and plans to open the island’s first Hotel Indigo in 2018.
