Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has unveiled the English and Chinese names of its first cruise ship designed specifically for the Chinese market.

The new 164,600-tonne Breakaway Plus-class vessel will be called ‘Norwegian Joy’ in English and ‘Xi Yue Hao’ (喜悦号) in Chinese when it debuts in summer 2017.

And NCL has also revealed a new Chinese name and logo for the mainland China market. The company’s name will be represented by characters 诺唯真 (Nuo Wei Zhen), which translates as “Promising, Exclusive and Authentic”. The launch of Norwegian Joy will mark the first time NCL has based a ship in China.

“After closely studying the Chinese cruise market for several years, we wanted to be clear about what we will deliver to our guests on this spectacular vessel,” said NCL’s CEO, Frank Del Rio.

“Norwegian Joy will provide the same sense of freedom and flexibility found on all Norwegian Cruise Line ships, but with resort-style vacation experiences and amenities designed specifically with the Chinese guest in mind.”

Norwegian Joy will have a capacity of 3,900 passengers and will feature a series of onboard amenities catering to the Chinese market, including entertainment, F&B and duty-free shopping. Further details of these facilities, and the ship’s homeport and itineraries, are expected to be announced in the coming months.

But David Herrera, NCL’s senior vice president & managing director of China, said the ship would offer a “quality of service, cuisine, entertainment and retail experience… that is simply not available in the China market today”.

“With Norwegian Joy, we will unquestionably offer our Chinese guests a superior product and introduce a new standard of innovation and excellence into what will soon be the world’s second largest cruise market,” he added.

To support NCL’s expansion in China, the company has opened offices in Beijing and Shanghai which will support all three brands in the company’s portfolio – Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.
