The development of Seabourn’s new luxury cruise ship, Seabourn Encore, reached a major milestone on 4 March when the ship touched the water for the first time.

The traditional “floating out” ceremony was held at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, where it will now undergo final construction and sea tests ahead of the ship’s delivery at the end of 2016. During the ceremony, a cord was cut allowing water to start flowing into the ship’s building dock.

“Seeing Seabourn Encore in the water is a very special moment and represents another important step toward the completion of our highly-anticipated ship,” said Richard Meadows, Seabourn’s president. “We continue to hear from our guests and travel industry partners about their excitement for this incredible ship, and they are just as eager as we are to welcome her to the Seabourn family later this year.”

Seabourn Encore is a 40,350-tonne ship that will be able to carry 600 passengers, based on double occupancy. All 300 suites will feature private verandas.

The ship will be named in a ceremony in Singapore on 7 January 2017 before embarking on its official inaugural voyage, a 10-day cruise to Bali. It will then make a 16-day journey from Bali to Sydney on 17 January 2017.
