Indian women demand safe solo travel

The number of Indian women travelling has increased over the past decades. Age is no longer considered a stigma and women of all ages are feeling more confident to travel.  But for female travellers in India, safety and security are still prime concerns when planning a vacation.

HolidayIQ released the results of a survey this week investigating female traveller expectations. The study, conducted on account of Women’s Day, saw more than 20,000 participants from over 30 Indian cities and towns.

The number of women travelling alone in India has increased sharply with a share of 29% of holidays planned as compared to 18% the previous year. And according to the survey, 72% of female travellers say that safe solo travel is their highest priority.

Approximately half of the female travellers surveyed (49%) would like to see more women tour guides, and 28% demand women-only transport. Forty-five percent said they would like to see female taxi drivers. Women are increasingly turning away from train journeys due to issues including poor sanitary conditions. More than half (55%) of the respondents said they want to travel in clean buses and trains.

Hotels and resorts continue to be women’s most popular choice as a holiday accommodation option, accounting for over 60%. However, in the last few months a greater interest has developed in alternate accommodation options such as home-stays, experiential resorts, camps, serviced, apartments and jungle lodges. Eighteen percent of women said they demand safe accommodation.

The proliferation of smartphones and travel apps has made it imperative to have proper Wi-Fi hubs; 47% of female travellers expect to have access to Wi-Fi hubs.

Woman travelling are also seeking rare travel experiences and 61% feel the necessity for better accessibility to remote destinations. They are more interested in off-beat destinations where they can enjoy experiential activities.

HolidayIQ revealed that holidays planned by women have an average budget 17% higher those planned by men and the average trip length for women has also increased to 5-7 days.
