Hainan, China’s southern resort island, experienced double-digit growth in terms of visitor numbers of tourist revenues in 2015.
According to the latest data from Hainan’s Tourism Development Commission, reported by Xinhua, the island welcomed 53 million visitors last year, up 11.4% compared to 2014. Revenues from tourism in the province jumped 13.0% to CNY57.3 billion (US$8.8bn).
And the island’s tourism authorities expect to see further growth this year, with almost 59m visitors predicted to flock to Hainan in 2016 and revenues expected to hit CNY65bn. If achieved, this would continue the trend of double-digit growth.
But despite the Chinese government’s efforts to turn Hainan in to the “Hawaii of China”, it is still struggling to lure international visitors. Of the 59m tourists forecast to visit Hainan in 2016, only 640,000 are expected to come from overseas.
The long-term target for Hainan, under its 2016-2020 five-year plan, is to achieve 80m tourists and CNY100bn in revenues by the end of the decade.
