Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has revealed the features and facilities its plans to introduce on Norwegian Joy, its first ever ship designed specifically for the Chinese market.
The new 3,900-passenger vessel is due to set sail from its twin homeports of Shanghai and Tianjin in summer 2017, and guests will be able to experience a range of new amenities, ranging from luxury suites to high-end retail outlets and virtual reality video games for kids.
For the wealthiest guests, Norwegian Joy will feature ‘The Haven by Norwegian’, which NCL calls a “ship-within-a-ship suite luxury complex”. Accessible only by a special key card, The Haven include a 74 luxury suites, a private restaurant, an enclosed courtyard and its own observation deck offering 180-degree views.
The company will also use the new ship to debut a brand new accommodation category: ‘Concierge’. These staterooms will be larger than usual and feature balconies and access to the Concierge Lounge, which has a private bar and serves refreshments throughout the day.
Other accommodation options include mini-suites, interior rooms with “virtual balconies”, and rooms designed for families.
In terms of leisure amenities, Norwegian Joy will include a two-level racetrack – the first ever at sea – and an open-air laser tag course. The new ‘Galaxy Pavilion’ area will also feature a series of interactive video games and rides, including racing car and flight simulators and virtual reality headsets with rollercoaster rides.
Outdoors, the ship will feature multi-story waterslides including the high-speed ‘Double Aqua Loop’ which extends out over the side of the ship, and the tandem ‘Aqua Racer’ slides which allow guests to race side-by-side on rubber tubes. And for a more peaceful experience, there is also an open-air park where guests can practice tai chi and yoga.
Finally, the ship will feature the largest shopping area of any Norwegian vessel, including a range of duty-free shops and international luxury brands.
A 164,600-tonne Breakaway Plus-class vessel, Norwegian Joy will also be known by the Chinese name ‘Xi Yue Hao’.
