Norwegian Cruise Line has celebrated the start of construction of its new Chinese ship, Norwegian Joy.

A keel-laying ceremony was held at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany to mark the official start of the project, with a traditional “lucky coin” being laid down prior to the placement of the first block.

The ceremony was attended by senior executives from Meyer Werft and Norwegian, including the cruise line’s newly-appointed president for China, David Herrera.

Norwegian Joy, which will be known as ‘Xi Yue Hao’ in Chinese, is the company’s first ever vessel to be designed specifically for Chinese guests. Scheduled to launch in summer 2017, the 3,900-passenger vessel will initially be based in Shanghai and Tianjin.

“We are carefully designing every element of Norwegian Joy, from her VIP accommodations to gourmet dining venues, outstanding recreation and entertainment choices and family-friendly features, to create a “first class at sea” experience that is completely focused on exceeding the expectations of our Chinese guests,” said Herrera, who will relocate to Shanghai this summer.

Norwegian recently announced some of the features it plans to introduce on Norwegian Joy, including luxury accommodation, a large interactive gaming area, an outdoor park for tai chi and yoga, duty-free shopping and a series of impressive waterslides.
