Air India to add 57 more planes

Air India will add 57 planes to its fleet in the coming years, it has been revealed.
The Hindustan Times reports that the bulk of the airline’s new aircraft will be single-aisle Airbus A320 aircraft, as the national carrier moves to revamp its short-haul fleet. These will include the new fuel-efficient A320neo model. Air India will also add three long-haul Boeing 777s and six Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
The majority of the new aircraft will be used to expand the airline’s fleet, with others replacing older aircraft. The airline had already announced plans to induct 15 leased A320s next year, while retiring its 20-year-old models.
“The fleet will increase to 114 by 2018 from 66 at present, which means an addition of 48 aircraft. We will be seeking the board’s approval,” an unnamed airline official was quoted saying.
In line with these fleet expansion efforts, Air India also recruited 500 cabin crew and plans to hire another 1,000 in future.
