Madhya Pradesh gears up for tourism

Madhya Pradesh is developing its tourism infrastructure, with INR13 billion (US$195 million) worth of public and private investments expected this year.
The Hindu reported state tourism officials as saying that the new funding would cover a range of areas, including 300 roadside amenities including cafes, restrooms, parks and parking facilities. The state government is focusing on wildlife, rural and religious tourism areas and activities, as well as expanding its accommodation offerings.
“Upgrading infrastructure is a continuous process and we are looking at doubling our rooms inventory in next five years, in the three-star and above category,” Tanvi Sundriyal of Madhya Pradesh Tourism was reported saying by the newspaper.
“We are also planning to build over 300 wayside amenities every 50km. Overall, for upgradation of infrastructure in the tourism sector we are looking at INR13 billion investment from [the] government as well as private sector this financial year.”
The state is also planning to develop the cities of Khajuraho and Orchha as international MICE destinations, and will conduct roadshows across the country to educate the travel trade.
Madhya Pradesh is expecting to see a 20% increase in visitor numbers this year.
