The surge in domestic air traffic in India is showing no signs of abating, with the country seeing strong double-digit growth in terms of passenger traffic in 2016.
According to the latest data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Indian airlines carried a total of 39.6 million passengers on domestic routes from January-May 2016, up 22.9% compared to the 32.23m recorded in the same period last year.
In May 2016 alone, a total of 8.7m passengers boarded Indian domestic flights. IndiGo has the largest market share in May, with 3.34m passengers accounting for 38.4% of the total, followed by Jet Airways (16.1%), Air India (15.3%), SpiceJet (12.6%) and GoAir (8.1%).
SpiceJet recorded the highest average passenger load factor, at 93.5%, while Vistara was the most punctual airline with an on-time performance of 85.1%.
