A flight operated by Air Koryo, the North Korean national carrier, was forced to make an emergency landing in China last week after the aircraft apparently caught fire.

The Xinhua news agency reports that the aircraft was flying from Pyongyang to Beijing when the incident occurred, and pilots decided to land in Shenyang, northeast China.

A passenger onboard the aircraft was reported saying that the cabin filled with smoke and that oxygen masks were deployed during the incident. Several passengers were having difficulty breathing, Xinhua added, and ground staff at Shenyang’s Taoxian International Airport were reported saying that the aircraft had caught fire.

An alternative aircraft was sent to Shenyang to carry passengers to Beijing.

Air Koryo is the only airline in the world to have a one-star Skytrax rating. Due to economic sanctions, its fleet is largely comprised of aging Soviet aircraft.
