Wyndham Hotel Group continues to expand in South Korea, with its focus now shifting to the country’s secondary markets.
The US-based hotel group, which is on track triple its Korean portfolio in the coming years, has now opened two new Ramada hotels in Gangwon and Gunsan. Gangwon is South Korea’s northeastern-most province and will host the 2018 Winter Olympics, while Gunsan is a city in southwest Korea’s North Jeolla province.
“We are at the forefront of hotel development in Korea and expanding our presence in line with the country’s larger strategy to drive both domestic and international travellers into secondary cities,” said David Wray, Wyndham’s vice president of acquisitions & development for Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim.
“There is an absence of international full-service hotel chains in Gangwon and Gunsan; and our Ramada brand caters to this gap with quality accommodation at an affordable price, appealing to both domestic travellers and the surge in Chinese tourists who prefer to stay in midscale properties.”
Wyndham’s expansion across South Korea comes as the country’s government plans to invest KRW25 trillion (US$22.6 billion) in its tourism and transportation infrastructure, including the development of a new high-speed rail network linking Seoul with various provinces, including Gangwon.
The 137-room Ramada Gunsan is located close to several major Korean corporate offices, and features a restaurant, spa and meeting space, including a ballroom. Ramada Gangwon Sokcho meanwhile, is located close to Daepo Port and offers 495 rooms, a restaurant, spa, fitness centre and a banqueting hall.
The opening of these two hotels takes Wyndham’s portfolio in South Korea to 18 properties, with several more expected to open in the coming months and years, under the Ramada, Days Inn and Howard Johnson brands.
