India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has revealed that the country’s rail network is expanding at a faster rate under his leadership.
In a speech to mark India’s Independence Day on Monday, Modi said that the total length of track commissioned over the last two years is more than double the amount initiated in the whole of the previous decade.
“Earlier, 1,500km [of] line was commissioned in the last 10 years, while today we have succeeded in commissioning 3,500km [of] line in two years,” the PM said.
The Economic Times reports that India is now laying an average of 7.8km of new track per day, and this is expected to increase to 13km per day next year.
India’s rail sector is currently undergoing its biggest phase of modernisation in decades, with plans for new high-speed and semi-high speed lines to run up and down the country. It is also reported to be considering plans to introduce ultra-high-speed maglev trains in future.
