Indian rail authorities are expected to soon commence survey work on a new railway line connecting to the scenic Himalayan town of Leh, Jammu & Kashmir.

The Economic Times reports that Indian Railways is working on plans for a new 498km line stretching from Bilaspur to Leh, via Manali.

The line, which would stretch across remote mountainous areas, is expected to boost tourism in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh and region of Ladakh. This forms part of the government’s plans to strengthen the rail network in areas close to Tibet.

An official with Indian Railways was reported saying that it has requested permission to set up a camp and office in Leh from which to commence survey work on the new line.
