AirAsia has taken delivery of its first ever Airbus A320neo aircraft – the new single-aisle jet that is designed to increase seat capacity and reduce emissions.
The low-cost carrier welcomed the new aircraft in a ceremony at the Airbus factory in Hamburg this week.
Fitted with new engines and aerodynamic improvements, the A320neo offers 15-20% reductions in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. And using a new cabin layout, Airbus has been able to install six more seats per aircraft, taking its total singe-class capacity to 186 passengers.
Combined, these enhancements mean that AirAsia will be able to carry more passengers in a more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly manner.
AirAsia has placed orders for a total of 404 A320neo series aircraft, including 100 larger A321neos which can carry up to 236 passengers.
These new aircraft are likely to be spread across the group’s short-haul airlines, including AirAsia Malaysia, Thai AirAsia, AirAsia Indonesia, AirAsia Philippines, AirAsia India, and the rebooted AirAsia Japan, which is due to take to the skies in the coming months.
AirAsia becomes only the sixth airline in the world to operate the A320neo, and the third in Asia following Indian LCCs IndiGo and GoAir.
