A huge new complex has opened on the banks of the Yangtze River in Chongqing, which is set to become a major draw for tourists.

The 120,000m² Landmark Riverside Park development features multiple attractions, including the city’s first Madame Tussauds waxwork museum and a Sea Life aquarium. Both attractions are managed by UK-based Merlin Entertainments. It will also showcase traditional Chongqing culture in the ‘Maker Space’ area, plus a vast array of F&B and retail outlets.

The complex was developed by Hongkong Land, which owns luxury retail property in several major Asian cities, as part of a joint venture with China Merchants Shekou Holdings.

“We anticipate that Landmark Riverside Park will be a cultural tourism attraction, a lifestyle centre, and a destination for leisure, entertainment, travel and shopping,” said Sun Chengming, vice president of China Merchants Group.

“It will also serve as a springboard for enhanced urban planning in Chongqing. China Merchants Shekou Holdings is committed to giving this historic city new life and continuing to play a leading role in China’s urban development.”

The new complex is located in Chongqing’s Nan’an district, which literally means “the southern bank of Yangtze River”. The development also involved the restoration of 1km of marble stone streets and the renovation of an old French navy barracks.
