High-speed Wi-Fi will be available at 100 Indian railway stations by the end of 2016, the country’s Railways Minister has confirmed.
IANS reported Suresh Prabhu as saying on Friday service providers are accelerating their installation plans, with a further 50 stations in line to receive broadband services by year-end, in addition to the 50 that have already been completed.
“RailTel in partnership with Google is implementing the high-speed Wi-Fi broadband services. And this service has already been provided at 50 stations and will complete the target of 100 stations by December 2016,” the minister was quoted saying at an event in Delhi.
Prabhu also commented on the need to bring modern services to India’s remote rural stations.
“While we need widespread network of multiple modes of transport like rail and road to reach out to far-flung areas, it is also necessary to provide digital rural connectivity across India,” he stated. “We have to definitely bridge rural-urban digital divide so that the benefits of modernisation and latest technology flow to rural areas.”
