India is launching a series of new rail services in its northeastern states

India is planning to launch rail services to the capitals of all seven of its northeastern states by 2020.

Three new trains will be introduced this month, linking major cities in the remote region.

The Economic Times reported an official with the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) as saying recently that new trains will run between Guwahati and Silchar (both in Assam), a distance of 383km, between Guwahati and Agartala, the capital of Tripura state (577km), and between Agartala and Dibrugarh, Assam (721km).

These new trains will initially run for a period of four months to judge the public response.

At present, more than 25 northeastern cities are connected by rail, including the capitals of Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.
