Aircalin, the long-haul national carrier of New Caledonia, has ordered new aircraft that could enable it to launch new long-haul routes.
The airline has placed an order for two twin-aisle Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, along with a pair of single-aisle A320neos. And Aircalin said that the new A330neos would enable it to “boost services to Japan” and potentially launch “new routes such as to China”.
The A320neos will be deployed on existing regional routes to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
“As part of our plan to boost tourism to New Caledonia, Aircalin has made a strategic decision to renew its complete fleet with the A320neo and the A330neo to grow routes and connect New Caledonia to the region,” said Didier Tappero, the airline’s CEO. “The Neo aircraft with its state-of-the-art technology will burn less fuel, lower our operational costs and offer our loyal passengers the highest standards in cabin comfort.”
Aircalin currently operates two older A330s and two A320s, so the new order will see the airline replace its entire fleet. This follows a similar move by New Caledonia’s domestic national carrier, Air Caledonie, which has already started replacing its entire fleet with four new ATR aircraft.
