Officials in Osaka are moving forward with plans to turn a manmade island into a major leisure tourism and gaming hub, with the eventual aim of hosting the 2025 World Expo.

The Japan Times reports that plans for the island of Yumeshima, in Osaka Bay, include the construction of a 70-hectare integrated resort, including hotels, casinos, retail areas and a convention centre.

A further 60 hectares have been earmarked for the 2025 World Expo, with the total development expected to cost JPY824 billion (US$7.4bn).

The ambitious project also includes an extension of the Osaka subway to Yumeshima.
