China plans “super park” for tiger conservation

A province in northeast China is planning to build a huge national park to protect the country’s endangered Siberian tigers.
The Xinhua news agency reports that the forestry department in Jilin province, which borders Russia and North Korea, has outlined plans for a park covering 14,600km² – 60% larger than Yellowstone National Park in the US. It will cover swathes of Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, along the Russian border.
Once completed, it is hoped that the park will become a sanctuary for highly-endangered Siberian tigers and Amur leopards. It is estimated that there are fewer than 30 tigers left in Jilin province.
