Tokyo’s Haneda Airport handled a record 80.1 million passengers last year.

The airport’s operator, Japan Airport Terminal Co, revealed on Friday (10 March 2017) that the full-year total for 2016 marked a 6.4% increase compared to the previous year, and the first time in the airport’s history that it has exceeded 80m passengers.

The growth was driven by Haneda’s expanding international connections, particularly to and from the US. International passenger traffic surged 19.1% to almost 15.2m in 2016, compared to a 3.8% rise in domestic traffic, to 65m.

The growth propelled Haneda to fourth position in the global airport rankings, in terms of passenger numbers, overtaking Chicago O’Hare. Only Atlanta, Beijing and Dubai airports handled more passengers than Haneda in 2016.
