Marriott International has penned an agreement with Japan’s Mori Trust to launch its first two Edition hotels in Tokyo.

Scheduled to open in 2020, the Tokyo Edition Ginza and Tokyo Edition Toranomon will mark the entry of yet another Marriott brand in Japan. Already this year the company has launched its Four Points concept in the country, and signed deals for its first Japanese Moxy hotels.

The new Edition hotels will be developed in partnership with Ian Schrager, the boutique hotel designer, to create a “truly distinct product [that] sets itself apart from anything else currently in the marketplace”.

Edition hotels are designed to be unique luxury properties that reflect the culture of their destination. Existing hotels are located in key cities such as London and New York.

Anthony Capuano, Marriott’s global chief Development officer, commented; “Tokyo serves as the perfect setting for the Edition brand, presenting the best of the world’s cultural and social milieu for travellers who seek exceptional places and experiences.”

The Tokyo Edition Ginza will be a newly-built 13-storey standalone property with 80 rooms. Located just off Chuo Street, the hotel will be on the doorstep of Ginza’s main shopping complexes. Construction is expected to start in May 2018, with the opening scheduled for March 2020.

Tokyo Edition Toranomon meanwhile, will be a 200-room hotel created following the redevelopment of the former Pastoral Building – a mixed-use project also comprising offices, residences and a medical centre.

Located in the Minato ward, it will be within walking distance of Roppongi-Itchome Station and not far from the Akasaka Palace and Meiji Shrine. This hotel is also expected to open in 2020.

The Tokyo hotels form part of a significant Asian expansion plan for the Edition brand. While the brand only currently operates one hotel in the region, located in Sanya, other projects are in the pipeline in Xiamen, Wuhan, Shanghai, Bangkok, Singapore and Bali.

This deal also marks the latest collaboration between Marriott and Mori Trust; earlier this year the two companies revealed plans to add five more Marriott Hotels & Resorts properties across Japan.

“We are pleased to introduce the Edition hotels which has proposed the world’s most advanced trends such as new culture and new luxury in major cities of the world to Tokyo’s central business district and the major shopping district,” said Miwako Date, president & CEO of Mori Trust. “I am convinced that from these two Edition hotels new values of a new era that attract the world’s people can be sent to the world at the best timing of 2020 when the Tokyo Olympic Games will be held.”
