Chairman of Qantas Airways, Leigh Clifford, has announced that Alan Joyce would be taking over the role of Chief Executive Officer upon the retirement of Geoff Dixon. Joyce is currently CEO of Qantas subsidiary airline Jetstar.
“Alan will assume the role of Chief Executive Designate from today and will also join the Board of Qantas with immediate effect,” Clifford said, adding that Dixon would step down after Qantas’ AGM on 28 November.
Dixon has faced a tough time in recent months, with industrial action, job losses, flight cuts and most recently the damaged fuselage and emergency landing of its London-Melbourne service.
However Clifford praised Dixon who he said, together with his team, has led Qantas through numerous challenges since his appointment in 2000.
“Qantas has successfully adapted and responded to the myriad challenges the industry has faced since 2001 and is duly recognised as one of the best managed airlines in the world,” Clifford said.
Joyce, 42, brings 20 years of experience in the aviation industry. He held positions with Qantas, Ansett and Aer Lingus prior to being appointed CEO of Jetstar in 2003.
