Malaysia is concerned that if Britain imposes visa requirements on Malaysians, it may set a precedent for other European countries to do the same.
The Star had quoted Malaysian Home Minister, Syed Hamid Albar, advising Malaysians who were overstaying or living illegally in Britain to take up the voluntary repatriation programme to come home. Under the programme, over-stayers are assisted in returning home by being given a free one-way ticket to their respective countries.
The minister was quoted saying that the irresponsible acts of a handful of Malaysians would affect other, law abiding citizens.
“There are more than 270,000 Malaysians visiting Britain annually. Imagine if we (all) had to apply for visas,” Albar said.
The report said the UK was considering whether to impose visa on visiting Malaysians following high incidents of overstaying and illegal workers.
