Following on from its Great Australian Challenge competition when Philippine Airlines (PAL) and Tourism Australia challenged the travel agencies of the UK to show-off their knowledge of down in a hotly contested battle at the London Hippodrome in mid-May, PAL has continued its British charm offensive with the launch of the Filipino Food Festival.
Located in gastronomic hotspots across London, the Filipino Food Festival is a showcase designed put the spotlight on the country’s national menu with a line-up of pop-up events, food stalls, chef chat and intimate supper clubs at over 20 restaurants.
Lauded by Vogue as “the original fusion cuisine” for its palate-popping flavour profile, influenced by the some of the world’s favourite global menus, including Indian, Malayasian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and American – the Filipino way of eating is the growing food trend of the 21st century – with no better a champion than the late, great Anthony Bourdain, who once declared Filipino food to the next big thing in the States, and that the local pork dish sisig “is perfectly positioned to win the hearts and minds of the world.”
David Cochrane, Philippine Airlines country manager said: “Much like the rich cultural diversity of Filipino food, PAL brings together East and West with our daily non-stop flights between London and Manila. As the official airline of The Filipino Food Festival, we are proud to present the flavours of the Philippines both in the air and on the ground.”
“One of the most exciting aspects of cultural diplomacy is culinary diplomacy”
Philippine Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo said: “One of the most exciting aspects of cultural diplomacy is culinary diplomacy. By offering the distinctive flavours and colours of the Filipino cuisine, we hope to entice participants to this festival to discover more of the Philippines, preferably by spending a holiday on one of our islands.”
Supported by The Philippine Embassy London, the festival coincides with the celebration of 120 years of Philippine Independence on 12 June 2018. To help celebrate, Philippine Airlines are offering special fares to coincide with the festival, with return flights to Manila starting from £523 with all taxes included.
London’s First Filipino Food Festival runs from 5 – 30 June. For full details on participating venues and offers visit FilipinoFoodFestival.london
