Travellers the world over adore Goa, a former Portuguese colony on India’s coastline. Located on the Arabian Sea and full of charm and natural beauty, Goa’s languor area offers fistfuls of exciting adventures. From kite boarding to trekking with elephants and curries to cocktails, you can pack all the adventure into one day and spend the rest of your Goa holidays relaxing on the beach, or spread the thrills out over your sun-kissed trip. It’s up to you!
Start at least one morning early and out on the water when the sea is at its calmest. Dolphin watching is best between October and May and it is well worth the effort to witness these amazing animals. (Insider tip: don’t spend too much time trying to take pictures of the dolphins; they’re speedy and hard to catch on film, so focus on watching and enjoying the experience more!).
Prefer to be under the waves? Dive Goa and Barracuda Diving are two professional dive outfits that will take you out to the best dive sites the area where you can SCUBA or snorkel to your heart’s content, exploring Grand Island’s reefs, Suzy’s Wreck, or Davy Jones’ Locker.
If you have a taste for sport and the thrill of the hunt, try deep sea fishing. Head out with any of the several licensed commercial fishing outfits, like John’s Boat Tours or Goa-Fishing, in the area and reel them in!
For lunch you can fry up your catch or reflect on the morning’s marine mammal encounters before setting for the afternoon. If you want to stick to the water, there are a plethora of water sports you can enjoy here, including windsurfing, water skiing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, kite surfing, parasailing, banana boat rides and more. Almost every beach in Goa has a local operator to hire from and some, like the National Institute of Water Sports in Panjim, even offer lessons.
As soon as you get tired of the sea, you can move inland for a privately-led elephant trek that will take you through Goa’s lush and diverse jungle. Or, if you find the Asian pachyderms a bit slow, there’s always go-karting at either of Goa’s two new tracks, at the Panaji-Margao Highway at Nuvem, in south Goa, or at Apora (near Indigo’s night market), in north Goa.
Finally, watching the sun set over the water in the evening is the perfect cap on a day of fun. Enjoy it with a tasty curry on your favourite Goa beach. And as darkness falls, you can enjoy drinks in the evening cool or, if you still have fuel left in your adventure tank, hop on a Full Moon Party Cruise!
Whether you pack it all in or portion your adventures in Goa out over several days, you’ll undoubtedly be glad you tried them all.
