Airbus’ newest long-haul aircraft, the A350, made its debut in the US this week.

Qatar Airways started deploying the new twin-aisle jet on its daily Doha-New York JFK service on Wednesday, marking the first time the US has welcomed a commercial A350 flight.

New York becomes the fourth destination served by Qatar Airways using its new fleet of A350s, following Frankfurt, Munich and Singapore.

The airline was the launch customer for the new aircraft and now operates seven A350s. An eighth will join Qatar Airways’ fleet before the end of the year and is scheduled to fly daily to Philadelphia from 1 January 2016.

Other new destinations to be served by the A350 next year will include Boston (launching on 16 March) and Adelaide (2 May). The airline will also deploy the A350 on a second daily flight to New York from 1 April.

“We are proud to be the first commercial airline to land the Airbus A350 in the United States,” said Qatar Airways’ group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker. “As the global launch customer of this new-generation aircraft, we are excited to introduce it to the American market, where we will commence commercial flights from January 1, 2016 on our route from Philadelphia.”

Qatar Airways’ A350 comes fitted with 36 seats in business class and 247 in economy.
